Ours is a tiny landlocked sovereign nation, holding happiness of her people to the highest priority – with the king who doesn’t derive happiness sitting at the golden throne but rather chooses to cook for his people with his very own royal hands and loves to play soccer game, bare-foot, with the little children of the nation; the future leaders of our happy Kingdom.
We are nestled between two giant super nations: India guarding us at the Eastern, Southern and western corridors, while China has lovingly embraced at the Northern stretch.
For centuries we remained quiet, settling little civil turmoil within, trying to find peace and happiness amongst the twigs and pebbles.
Hence with the prophesized vision of Lama Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal – initializing dual system of governance and then ultimately handing over systemic governance and civilized citizens to the golden throne of Sir Ugyen Wangchuck, the first monarch of Bhutan.
As the Kings lavished their loving kindness to their subjects, the peace and happiness unbounded overflowed the lips of the people, from generation to generation in songs of praise. Hence our dynamic 4th Monarch envisioned the concept of Gross National Happiness – to be more essential than Gross National Product. The means of measurement of the country’s developmental philosophy is hence unmatched!
To us, our National happiness is our GDP!
